Enhancing research methodology through external and internal collaboration involves leveraging the expertise and resources of various individuals and organizations to improve the quality and impact of research projects. To achieve this, it is important to establish clear communication channels, set common goals and objectives, and define roles and responsibilities for all involved. Collaboration with both external and internal experts can connect researchers with institutions, industries, or community organizations, providing diverse perspectives, opportunities, and resources that enhance research outcomes.
Assessment of Integrated Dairy Farming with Vermicomposting Technology in Gondar City, Amhara Region, Ethiopia
Dairy farming is one of the leading livestock commodities in Ethiopia, with a population of more than 70 million cattle heads (CSA, 2021). It plays a significant role in the country’s agricultural sector, contributing to food security and economic development. However, despite its importance, the contribution of the dairy sector to the national economy is relatively low when compared with the population size.
Challenges such as insufficient technologies, lack of integrated farming strategies, traditional farming practices, climate change, and inadequate feed quality all contribute to this low productivity. Additionally, single farm businesses and traditional farming practices often lead to environmental degradation and resource depletion, which further exacerbate food insecurity.
To address these issues, alternative solutions like integrated dairy farming with vermicomposting technology should gain more attention. Despite the potential for dairy production and the benefits of vermicomposting, the adoption of this technology remains limited in Ethiopia, particularly in Gondar City. My research for the Adroit International Research Fellowship (AIRF) aims to explore the integration of these methods to enhance dairy production and sustainability.
Role of External Mentorship in Methodology Development
My mentor for the fellowship, an assistant professor in food security and sustainable land management at Addis Ababa University, provided valuable guidance. She offered constructive feedback on key areas, including research title modification, revising objectives and research questions, and clarifying the relationships between the different components of the framework. Her comments also improved the research methodology by helping to set a clear research approach, design, and data collection methods.
Furthermore, I sought guidance from other external experts with specialized knowledge relevant to my subject matter. This ensured that I received comprehensive input to refine my study.
Impact of Internal Team Support on Research Execution
The AIRF internal team has been highly organized, with a clear timeline established for each stage of the research process. Their support came in various forms:
- Information Sharing: Through email conversations, online workshops, and WhatsApp group discussions, the team provided access to a wealth of information.
- Training: The team facilitated online training, such as using Kobo Toolbox, and shared research materials to improve the organization of research methodologies.
I received continuous support through virtual platforms, including chat services, email correspondence, and video calls, which instrumental in addressing my specific questions based on the fellowship guidelines.
Overcoming Challenges with Collaborative Support
During my research, I encountered several challenges, such as internet and power interruptions (due to the region being under a state of emergency) and financial constraints for field data collection. However, with the help of the research and analysis manager, we communicated effectively to find alternative financial solutions, and I received consistent encouragement to overcome these hurdles.
Some gaps in proposal development, data collection tool preparation, and methodology refinement were also addressed with the manager’s support, which helped ensure the research stayed on track.
Conclusion
Collaborating with external and internal experts has greatly enhanced my skills and understanding of research methodologies. Exposure to different perspectives and expertise has allowed me to critically evaluate and improve my own research practices. This hands-on experience, along with the knowledge transfer I have gained, has helped me refine my research methodologies, making them more informed and strategic.
Moreover, this collaboration has provided opportunities to expand my professional network, build new relationships with experts in my field, and contribute meaningfully to research projects. These connections are invaluable for researchers looking to advance their careers while contributing to impactful research projects.
